ADV - Introduction to Bird Banding
9096 Highway 61, Schroeder, MN website

Late May and early June are often high traffic times for migrating warblers along the North Shore of Minnesota. During heavy movement days it is possible to see a wide variety of warblers in their brilliant breeding plumage in just moments. Join us for a much closer look at these amazing birds through the scientific research of bird banding. You will learn about the aging and sexing of the birds, capture and handling techniques, and the natural history of these small colorful birds. Who will we meet up close and personal in these two days? When you are banding birds, you get what you catch, and the exploration and fascination is endless. We will also take advantage of the opportunity to listen and identify songs and calls, and explore a variety of habitats. During last year’s banding season at Sugarloaf, we caught and banded 54 different species of birds including 17 species of warblers. It can be a very busy place where the birds are concerned. By the way, we are not limited to the passerines, there are resident peregrine falcons, and the sheltered cove and beach provide a natural resting place for migrating shorebirds and water birds as well. This is a very busy and hands-on class, so class size is limited to 12. Note: a license to band birds requires years of training and experience, so you will not leave the class with a permit to band birds, but rather having had a unique experience with these birds, and a gained a greater understanding of what we know and do not know about our fine feathered friends.
The course cost is $100 and includes course manuals and supplies.
