Woman, Watching: Louise de Kiriline Lawrence and the Songbirds of Pimisi Bay by Merilyn Simonds tells the fascinating true story of Louise de Kiriline Lawrence, a Swedish aristocrat who survived the Russian Revolution and went on to become an internationally renowned naturalist. After working as a nurse in northern Ontario, including caring for the famous Dionne Quintuplets, she retreated to a remote log cabin and devoted her life to studying birds. Often compared to Rachel Carson, she was among the first to document the mid-20th-century decline of songbirds. If you’ve never heard of this remarkable woman, this award-winning biography is a fascinating introduction to her life and pioneering work.
Join us for a thoughtful, community-centered discussion grounded in curiosity, observation, and connection to the natural world.
