VOL - Volunteer Stewardship Project: Buckthorn Removal

Volunteer Stewardship Project: Buckthorn Removal website

Quaker Rd
Albany, MN 56307

Come out and help us remove invasive buckthorn at Avon Hills Forest SNA. The task for the day will be pulling young buckthorn and cutting and treating larger buckthorn.

This SNA is characterized by rolling topography which supports extensive hardwood forest dominated by oak trees. The landscape is dotted with wetlands and lakes featuring lowland plant communities such as tamarack swamp and black ash seepage swamp.

Tools, instructions, and good camaraderie will be provided. Bring water, snacks, and dress for working in the weather. Footwear appropriate for outdoor work/hiking is recommended. If you have your own gloves you'd like to use, please bring those as well. There are no maintained trails, public restrooms nor access to drinking water on this site.

Prior to the event, please watch the Buckthorn Blaster Training Video and take the Buckthorn Blaster Volunteer Quiz. This will allow you to use buckthorn blasters to treat cut stumps. Please email sna.dnr@state.mn.us once you've completed the training and to register for the day. Registration in-advance is required.

Directions From Avon 1.4 miles west on Co Hwy 54, then 1.8 miles north on Tower Rd, then 0.5 mile west on Quaker Rd. Park in lot on south. From here we will hike south into forested area of the site.
