The Minnesota Lichen Map is a citizen-scientist project that is open to all participants who love lichens.
It is curated by Minnesota Master Naturalists to indicate distribution of lichens in urban and open areas of Minnesota, bring awareness to lichens and eventually create a series of ‘Lichen Trails’ for the citizens of Minnesota.
GOALS:
- Provide educational opportunities for MN Mnat members
- Work with Indigenous, scientific, and community partners to bring awareness, and protection to MN Lichens.
- Create a series of short, educational videos about lichen biology, locations, identification, cultural connections, and importance/impact
- Develop an iNaturalist project that will geolocate and map lichen populations around the state of MN
- Train a cadre of “lichen scouts” who will locate and identify lichens that are present in their local area.
- Create a series of local lichen-trails in Minnesota
- Develop MN LichenBike a statewide bike path with lichen info
