Bogs are incredible ecosystems, with species adapted to diverse conditions. Many of the species found in the Sax-Zim Bog are dormant (or have left the Bog entirely!) during the winter season, but that doesn’t mean the landscape is vacant! The Sax-Zim Bog is prime wintering habitat for a number of birds including Red and White-winged Crossbills, Common and Hoary Redpolls, Rough-legged Hawks, Northern Hawk Owls, and Northern Shrikes. These visitors utilize the region for a short season, but influence the ecology of the bogs and forests they occupy. This training will introduce bog ecology from the perspective of the winter and how the species (flora and fauna alike) survive winter conditions.

This field trip will include indoor and outdoor portions, so do dress accordingly. Please bring any optics (binoculars and/or hand lenses) that you might find useful for time out in the field. Snowshoes may be useful for this field trip, but are not required. To reserve a pair of snowshoes, email Head Naturalist Clinton at naturalist@saxzim.org following registration to reserve your pair. Bring a lunch, refillable water bottle (water is available for refills at the Welcome Center), and any cameras or notetaking materials you might need for the day.
