Nature is filled with fascinating organisms, come and plan to spend a few hours to learn about some of these vital organisms contributing to the health of our ecosystems - lichen! Learn lichen identification fundamentals, tips on where to find lichens, and learn of intriguing lichen properties, including smell, color changes, and air quality predictions! Through the workshop find out how you can contribute to a citizen science lichen project to help scientists better understand populations of various lichen species in our area of Minnesota. The workshop will include formal instruction on lichen identification fundamentals, how to photograph lichens, and understand how lichens play an important role in our ecosystems. After instruction time, attendees will practice their lichen identification and photography skills at the beautiful Cloquet Forestry Center home to unique lichen communities! Participants will learn to use the Minnesota Lichen Map Project to help collect lichen occurrence data via citizen scientists-YOU!!

Participants will receive a loupe as part of the registration fee. You will need a camera, or your cell phone. This is an indoor, outdoor event, so dress appropriately. Sunscreen, water and bug spray are suggested. Long pants and sturdy footwear is the best.

Workshop will be held in the auditorium of the Cloquet Forestry Center.

This advanced training is being offered in partnership with the Arrowhead Native Plant Explorers group.

The course cost is $20 and includes course manuals and supplies.

Instructor Information

tanner barnharst

Tanner has a BS in Microbiology and an MS in Environmental Engineering. He has an enthusiasm for finding and identifying the odd and interesting world of fungi including mushrooms and lichens. Tanner has been teaching in formal roles for over 10 years and enjoys adapting fungal education for folks of all educational backgrounds and mobility levels. Outside of mushrooming, Tanner enjoys photography, camping, and reading.
