At almost 800 species, moths are the most species rich group documented in the greater Sax-Zim Bog! Moths often surpass their butterfly cousins in color, pattern, behavior, and specialized relationship to plants. This training will serve as a good introduction to moth diversity in northeastern Minnesota, but also gives the opportunity for us to spend time outdoors at a time most folks don’t often think to experience. We will spend time checking out nighttime biodiversity with headlamps, UV Flashlights, and more! There should be a good diversity of nocturnal insects calling, bats to see, and other mammals to hear.

Because this field trip is at night, and mostly stationary, plan on bringing a head lamp or flashlight and folding chair. Plan on bringing bug spray or long sleeves to prepare for non-target nocturnal insects. Feel free to bring cameras, hand lenses, or any other item you might need to experience the Bog at night! All walking will take place on level surfaces and trails near the Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center.
