ADV - Winter Birds and Birdwatching

Winter Birds and Birdwatching website

8793 Owl Avenue
Meadowlands, MN 55765

This Advanced Training will be meeting at the Wilburt Café in Cotton, MN (9105 US-53, Cotton, MN 55724), though we will spend some time at the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center.

The Sax-Zim Bog is a world-famous bird watching location. Most of the visitors to the Bog come during the winter season with hopes of seeing owls, winter finches, Canada Jays, and more! Due to the size of the Sax-Zim Bog, it can be a daunting place to visit, especially considering the cold weather and sometimes difficult driving conditions. This Advanced Training will focus on the basics of bird watching in the winter, with a focus on the birds of Sax-Zim Bog. We will also be discussing winter adaptations some of these species have, as well as investigating what makes Sax-Zim Bog such important winter habitat for these birds. Plan on bringing a pair of binoculars, cameras, and notebook, if you like taking notes! Do expect to be outdoors for most of the day.

This field trip will include indoor and outdoor portions, so do dress accordingly. Please bring optics (extra spotting scopes are always helpful), cameras, and any field guides you might need for a day of birding. Plan on bringing a lunch and any snacks that you might need through the day. Carpooling will be helpful during this field trip, so if you are comfortable being a carpool driver, please let Head Naturalist Clinton know following your registration for the course, by emailing naturalist@saxzim.org.

The course cost is $35 and includes course manuals and supplies.
