Come learn about the Big Woods, Big Rivers biome through instruction, review of BWBR online PPTs, small group activities, field trips, and a capstone service project on the campus of Dodge Nature Center. In addition, we'll explore the geology, plants, wildlife, aquatics, and ecological systems of Minnesota's temperate deciduous woodlands along the Twin Cities - Minnesota & Mississippi corridor. We will meet once a week on Tuesday nights from 6 - 8:30 pm, there will also be two Saturday field trips from 8:30 – 4:30 pm.
This course is being presented in partnership with the UMN Extension. Come explore this biome in a fun and exciting new way!
NOTE: Attendance at all class sessions and completion of a capstone service project with a group will be required for successful class completion. Projects and groups will be determined by course instructors. Dodge Nature Center will be following all MDH guidelines regarding covid protocol in place at the time of the class.
The course cost is $295 and includes course manuals and supplies.

Instructor Information
David spent 35 years working in the Information Technology industry, for 20 plus years he’s been an interpretative volunteer at the Minnesota Zoo. In 2005 he attended the inaugural Big Woods, Big Rivers (BWBR) Master Naturalist class, in 2008 attended the Prairies and Potholes (PP) class and in 2016 the Northwoods, Great Lakes (NWGL) class. In early 2011 he took the MNat instructor training to teach BWBR classes for the MN Zoo. Since then he has been an instructor or co-instructor of eight MNat classes. In 2016 he also became a Dakota County coordinator for the Bluebird Recovery Program of Minnesota, in 2018 he joined their board as the website manager and recently has become their board chairperson.
Pete Cleary is the Director of Environmental Education at Dodge Nature Center. He has worked in the environmental education field for 23 years at various nature centers and in various capacities such as plowing snow, writing curriculum, teaching programs to diverse audiences, caring for live animals, managing interns and acting as naturalist liaison to the award-winning Garlough Environmental Magnet School. Having taught thousands of people in the outdoors, he still looks forward to the opportunity to get outside and explore the natural world.
Britt Forsberg (she/her/hers) is an Extension Educator with the Minnesota Master Naturalist Program. She holds a BA in Biology and Environmental Studies from Gustavus Adolphus College and an MEd in Family Education from the University of Minnesota. Within the Minnesota Master Naturalist program, Britt develops and leads advanced training opportunities that lead to volunteer service. When she's not working, you may find her hiking with her nose to the ground to look for bees and other pollinators or wrangling her rambunctious toddler, Wren.
