Rochester, MN 55902
Wild parsnip in road ditches got you down? Excess buckthorn in in the county park a nuisance? Wondering how to take action about the zebra mussel infestation in your lake? Have you ever wanted to engage a resource manager, local decision maker or elected official about invasive species in your community but don’t know how to go about it? If you answer yes to any of these questions this upcoming learning opportunity is for you! University of Minnesota Extension is presenting a first-in-the-nation program to help woodland and shoreline owners, master volunteers, and natural resources professionals grow their skills to meaningfully engage decisions makers about invasive species. Participants are expected to complete approximately 8 hours of online training in the weeks before attending an in-person workshop on Saturday, October 13, 2018 from 10 AM - 4 PM at the Kahler Grand Hotel in Rochester, MN. The total workshop cost is $50, and includes lunch. Register at z.umn.edu/EmpowerUReg, but hurry! Space is limited and registration will close on September 17 to ensure everyone has time to complete the online learning in advance of the October 13 workshop. At the end of this training you will: Understand the roles and levels of government and who to contact regarding invasive species management. Learn to use skills such as influence, power, persuasion, framing, questioning and listening in interactions with decision makers. Know where to find reputable information on the status of invasive species in your area. Have an engagement plan and experience practicing it in a safe, peer-learning environment. See yourself as a resource to decision makers on invasive species management. View engagement with decision makers as a norm and encourage others to do it. Network with other people passionate to make a difference around invasive species. Most importantly, you will be able to apply what you have learned in this workshop to confidently share information with decision makers, give input on policies and plans, and be an active voice in land management around invasive species.
