NPLD River Bend Nature Center
Faribault, MN 55021
Join the staff from River Bend Nature Center for National Public Lands Day 2018.
Description of work: Volunteers will aid in the removal of invasive buckthorn and honeysuckle.
Skill requests: Volunteers with chainsaw certification and/or Invasive Blitz leadership training. All are welcome. Larger plants might require the use of a chainsaw.
Special tools and supplies: Weed wrenches, loppers, hand saws, gloves, chainsaws for those with certification.
Need: River Bend has over 700 acres of land and over 90% of that contain invasive species. Buckthorn is a major issue at River Bend, like so many other places, but the location to which the work would be done has great meaning to the River Bend community. Honor Point sits atop a rocky slope overlooking the Straight River. Honor point itself is made up of rocks and benches to sit upon and enjoy nature, then you look down at the pavers and notice writing on them. Those pavers are there in memory and honor of those with great love for River Bend Nature Center. The area surrounding Honor Point is highly invaded by buckthorn; however among all that buckthorn are some beautiful oak trees, patches of grass and wildflowers trying to grow. The impact National Public Lands Day and Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteers would have at River Bend Nature Center would help restore native habitats and help to honor those who have helped River Bend become what it is today and those who keep it going for the future.
