Identifying trees during the summer can be relatively easy when they have their leaves. But winter tree ID can be challenging. But it’s not impossible!

Join Margie Menzies, Sugarloaf Cove Naturalist, and Mike Reichenbach, University of Minnesota Extension Forester, for a Winter Tree and Shrub Identification Workshop on Saturday, March 14 from 9 am – noon at the historic University of Minnesota Limnology Lab, 6008 London Road (Hwy 61), Duluth, MN.

We’ll start indoors reviewing and practicing the use of a variety of winter tree id keys using a wide range of branch and twig samples. We will learn from each other and build our winter tree id skills. Then we’ll head outdoors for a short walk to examine a number of woody plants. There are far more clues to use for tree id in the winter than we think! We will discuss how to use bark patterns, color, texture, and tree shape to help puzzle out these winter trees.

Cost: $10.00 per participant at the door. Pre-registration is required. To register scroll down and click "Take Course"

We have a maximum of 20 spots available for the workshop. If we have more than 20 people registered by March 10, we may add a second workshop in the afternoon.

This event is hosted by the Head of the Lake Master Naturalist Chapter, Sugarloaf: The North Shore Stewardship Association, and the University of Minnesota Extension Master Woodland Owner program.

This event counts toward advanced training hours for Master Naturalist and for Master Woodland Volunteer Programs.

For more information on the workshop contact Mike Reichenbach, University of Minnesota Extension 218-726-6470 or reich027@umn.edu
