Ice fishing is a quintessential Minnesota winter sport. If you have never tried it or want too, come learn the art and science of this sport with renowned National Park Service’s, Ranger Gordon. He has been offering ice-fishing classes throughout the Cities for over a decade. Signup to learn in a 1.5 hour class before each of the three events and help out afterwards with the 2 to 2.5 hour event after your lesson. The cost is a onetime fee of $25.00 and covers one class or all three classes. You do need to sign up so that Gordon knows how many instructors/helpers to expect at each event. These 3 events are listed below and include either the “Take a Kid Ice Fishing (1-19-2019, start for your class is 11:30 am) or Family Ice Fishing (1-26-2019 &/or 2-9-2019, start time for your class is 7:30 am). Dress to be outside for 5 hours.

Master Naturalists will be able to get credit for the 1.5 hour class and 3 hours of volunteer work after each event.

DESCRIPTION: Have you ever walked on a frozen lake? Fished through the ice? You can do that and more at our ice fishing events. On this day it isn’t even necessary for an adult to have a fishing license, as long as they are accompanied by a youth age 15 or younger. We supply the bait, poles, tackle, encouragement and instruction, so all you need to do is show up and join us on the ice. We even drill the holes through which you fish, but you can drill your own if you wish! Be sure to join a ranger in a shelter and while warming up view the mysterious world below the ice through an underwater camera.

Fishing licenses will not be required, but it is a strictly catch and release program. We supply the bait, poles, tackle, encouragement and instruction so all you need to do is show up and join us on the ice. We even drill the holes through which you fish, but you can drill your own if you wish! Be sure to join a ranger in a shelter and while warming up view the mysterious world below the ice through an underwater camera.

Instructor Information

Stephan Carlson

Dr. Stephan Carlson. Dr. Carlson has worked for the U of M Extension and the College of Food Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences for the last 25 years doing outreach and teaching classes in environmental education (EE) and interpretation. He has worked in the fields of EE, outdoor recreation, informal science education and environmental interpretation for the past 35 years. In addition to his work teaching interpretation, he also teaches Science and Math summer school on the White Earth Indian Reservation. His research is on understanding the components that informal science experiences have on young people and how to develop quality programs that incorporate these components in environmental education.
