Spend the day riding the beautiful trails at the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area and see the amazing views of the old mines and lakes that were once a former hole in the ground. The fastest growing recreation area in northern Minnesota, Cuyuna boasts revitalized old mining pits with outdoor recreation, canoeing, fishing and off-road biking. This class will be an introduction to off-road biking and a guided tour of the natural and cultural history of the Cuyuna area. Participants will meet at the Path & Paddle in Crosby MN at 10:00 am. There, we will pick up bike rentals (or bring your own Off Road bike!) before going out on the beginner-level trails for the next 4 hours. Lunch will be provided mid-day on a stop at the Miner’s Mountain Rally Ct.

Schedule:

10:00 meet at bike rental Cycle Path & Paddle; Crosby, MN
10:30 Guided ride begins to the recreation area
12:00 lunch
12:30 Afternoon rides are more on your own to Parks overlooks
2:30 return to Cycle Path & Paddle
3:30 Depart for home

Instructor Information

Stephan Carlson

Dr. Carlson has worked for the U of M Extension and the College of Food Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences for the last 28 years doing outreach and teaching classes in environmental education (EE) and environmental interpretation. He has worked in the fields of EE, outdoor recreation, informal science education and environmental interpretation for the past 40 years. In addition to his work teaching interpretation, he also teaches Science and Math summer school on the White Earth Indian Reservation. His research is on understanding the components that informal science experiences have on young people and how to develop quality programs that incorporate these components in environmental education.
