Fascinated by worms? Want to help in the battle against forest invaders?
The Great Lakes Worm Watch (GLWW) is a citizen science project involving volunteers from across the United States and Canada in earthworm research. It was developed by researchers at the University of Minnesota Duluth to collect long-term data on earthworm populations. Although new research is emerging about the effects of exotic earthworm invasions, very little is known about the distributions of earthworm and earthworm species across the region. As a GLWW volunteer, your contributions will aid in better understand earthworm distribution in particular the locations of the newly emerging earthworm threat Amynthas commonly called the “Jumping Wormâ€.
At this special workshop for Minnesota Master Naturalists, you’ll learn about earthworm biology and the GLWW, and gain hands-on practice with several data collection activities. You’ll leave the workshop with specific knowledge on how to sample a site, enter your data on-line, interpret your findings, and engage your friends, family members, and neighbors in an exciting science research project.
Why participate? Worm sampling is great fun! This is a conservation-driven purpose—to help save our forest! The worms are harmless in your garden but are devastating to our forests! Let your inner curiosity come and have fun with this Worm Watchers program! Both classes are the same.

The training will be held both indoor and out of door activities. There will be classroom activities and field collection activities in the afternoon. Lunch and snacks are provided. Dress for outdoor weather. If the training is cancelled, notification will be sent by email.
Cost: Master Naturalist $25.00, Non-Master Naturalist $35.00
Minimum; Need at least 6 to hold the training

Instructor Information
Dr. Carlson has worked for the U of M Extension and the College of Food Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences for the last 28 years doing outreach and teaching classes in environmental education (EE) and environmental interpretation. He has worked in the fields of EE, outdoor recreation, informal science education and environmental interpretation for the past 40 years. In addition to his work teaching interpretation, he also teaches Science and Math summer school on the White Earth Indian Reservation. His research is on understanding the components that informal science experiences have on young people and how to develop quality programs that incorporate these components in environmental education.
